WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- The Girls Empowerment Summit will take place virtually on March 11 and 12
- The event is free and is open to girls ages 13-18 years old who live in San Antonio
The Girls Empowerment Summit, which was canceled last year amid the Covid-19 pandemic, is back and will take place on March 11 and 12. Girls aged 13-18 years old can now register for the virtual summit that will be available online, on television, and by dial-in. In an effort to build awareness, the City of San Antonio encourages the community to join the celebration by lighting up their businesses and homes in hot pink on both days of the event.
“Last year, we had an overwhelming response of community support for the Girls Empowerment Summit,” said District 4 City Councilmember Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia on Monday. “Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we had to cancel it. This year, we are going fully virtual and making it available to girls from all over San Antonio!”
The summit will feature discussions led by iEmpower, an organization designed to inspire every woman to be empowered and engaged and to foster a culture of community and The Social Butterfly Gal, an award-winning social media strategist and TEDx speaker. The Boardroom Project, an organization that aims to develop future board leaders, one girl and woman at a time, will also make a presentation as well as a representative from Metro Health.
The discussions led by local partners will focus on professional development, social media, self-care, and healthy relationships. The event will also feature a panel discussion with the Honorable Judge Monique Diaz, CPS Energy President and CEO Paula Gold-Williams, and Brigadier General Caroline Miller. As a special treat, the summit will also feature San Antonio’s 2020-2022 Poet Laureate Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson, a longtime advocate for young people.
“The Girls Empowerment Summit is a passion project for many of us at the City of San Antonio,” said Deputy City Manager María Villagómez. “I am honored to work closely with so many local leaders to empower our community’s girls with the skills they need to be successful. I encourage all San Antonio girls to take part in this free, virtual leadership training opportunity.”
Registration is now open. The first 300 girls to register will receive exclusive Girls Empowerment Summit bags. To learn more about the Girls Empowerment Summit, text GirlsSummit to 55000 or visit their website.
