WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Ruby City is hosting its second public art scavenger hunt, beginning Jan. 22 and running through Jan. 29.
  • The scavenger hunt takes participants through the San Antonio River, showcasing cultural staples and important works throughout the river.

Starting Jan. 22 and running through Jan. 29, Ruby City has created an interactive scavenger hunt in order to promote San Antonio’s roots to public art. Participants will explore public artworks throughout the city, discovering famous public artworks and others which are more obscure and lesser-known.

With nine installments total, the Ruby City scavenger hunt provides great insight and opportunities to explore public artwork around the city while still following safety guidelines. The hunt’s route takes participants strategically through the San Antonio River, beginning on the north side and concluding in the south side with Margarita Cabrera’s Árbol de la Vida.

Ruby City’s idea, founded in Oct. of 2020 as a celebration of their first anniversary, has allowed participants to get to know the history of public art in San Antonio, as well as discover more about the artists and their work for the city.

Those participating in the scavenger hunt can expect to marvel at cultural staples, such as the Puente de Encuentros, designed by Rolando Briseño, and Alex de León’s mural, Some Things I’ve Experienced in South Texas. Contestants can find a detailed map of the scavenger hunt, along with instructions, here

Participants can submit their completed scavenger hunts by tagging @RubyCity in their images on Instagram or Facebook. Alternatively, they can email their images to info@rubycity.org

Four winners will be chosen at random and will receive prizes from small, local businesses. Prizes for the four winners include a $50 gift certificate to Herweck’s, a $50 gift certificate to Maverick Texas Brasserie, a pair of tickets to Hopscotch and a logo bag of Ruby City goodies.
