WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Now through September 5, SAACS will offer $20 adoption fees for both dogs and cats
  • Pets adopted from SAACS are sterilized, vaccinated with their first round of shots, and microchipped with a free lifetime registration

Seasonal overcrowding and reduced adoption numbers at San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) are spurring what could be a life-saving effort. The organization is adjusting adoption fees through the end of the summer to encourage the placement of shelter pets in the community. While the pet shelter normally sees population increases as the weather warms, this summer has seen a larger-than-usual influx. Many of the pets being surrendered are dogs, cats, and entire litters.

From July 1 through September 5, SAACS will offer $20 adoption fees for both dogs and cats. Senior pets will be available for a waived adoption fee. All adoptions are on a first-come, first served basis with placement hours available seven days a week. All placement processes and policies are in effect, including the required meet and greet sessions for potential adopters. Experts encourage families and individuals to take advantage of shelter matchmaking services to ensure a good connection with their new dog or cat.

Pets adopted from the San Antonio Animal Care Services are sterilized, vaccinated with their first round of shots, and microchipped with a free lifetime registration. As an added bonus, training advice and classes are also available for canine adopters.

For residents who are presently unable to adopt but would still like to help the organizations with its endeavors, SAACS has a wish list on their website of items needed to care for the animals while they wait to be adopted.

On Thursday, the 93rd Intelligence Squadron on Lackland Air Force Base donated pet items to the organization.

“The remarkable Air Force squadron donated a massive amount of pet items that helped fill our bins to the rim,” a spokesperson wrote on the SAACS Facebook page. “They were so excited to see how much their team could fill their backpacks with…items our shelter pets could enjoy and benefit from. We are so thankful for their kindness and support!”

Those interested in donating supplies for shelter pets can view the organization’s current wish list here.

Donations for shelter pets can be dropped off inside the building’s welcome center Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
