The Overtime Theater on the city’s Northwest Side is currently seeking new works from Black playwrights for its New Play Development Series which will launch the first week of Black History Month.

Now in its fifteenth year, the theatre, which focuses on the experience of the playwright, seeks previously unproduced, original work for the program. Though full-length plays are welcome, the Overtime especially seeks one-act plays that require one to three actors. The chosen play (or plays) will be awarded two rehearsals and an in-person staged reading on Thursday, Feb 3. 2022 on the Overtime’s mainstage.

According to a press release, the Overtime is particularly interested in “bold, innovative plays that are both challenging and entertaining.”

Only submissions in a Word document or PDF will be considered. The Overtime Theater, an all-volunteer organization, compensates playwrights with one equal share of donations to our love bucket at the end of the show’s presentation.

Submissions should be sent to submissions@theovertimetheater.org. Deadline is midnight Jan. 29, 2022.

In March, the series will focus on new works written by women in observance of Women’s History Month. Deadline for the Overtime’s call for plays written by women is Feb. 15, 2022.
