The City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, located at 4710 State Highway 151, will host a special adoption offer on cats, in search for a purr-manent home with hopes to decrease occupied shelter space. The adoption event began on Thursday, May 27 and will continue until Sunday, May 30.
The event, dubbed as Kittypalooza is a four-day special on all kittens and cats living in the Alamo City’s Animal Care Services shelter, and lowers the adoption fee to 15 dollars per cat while also providing spay or neutering services as well as vaccinations.
Due to Texas’ warm climate, the spring sees an increase in animal births, leaving shelters overwhelmed with limited space, often leaving the shelters overcrowded and oftentimes leaving the employees to care for the animals in their offices to make kennel space for the abundance of new arrivals the shelter receives daily.
As of right now, The City of San Antonio Animal Care Services is housing dozens of cats and kittens, along with 200 more placed in foster homes.
Public Relations Outreach Manager, Lisa Norwood said the shelter has hosted events and special adoption offers in the past, but it typically takes a few weeks to plan. She said due to the urgency of the situation, Kittypalooza was thought of in a matter of days.
“We joke here at the shelter that we want people to put us out of business,” Norwood said. “We don’t want to be in the business of bringing in unwanted animals. We prefer people do right by their pets; get them sterilized, get them vaccinated, get a microchip for them, everything it takes to be a responsible pet owner.
Norwood said she realizes it can be difficult to care for a pet especially when it comes to the financial aspect. She said the shelter has a clinic which provides resources to new and experienced pet owners including vaccinations, spay or neutering and microchipping.
All cats in the shelter, including the foster kittens will be available for adoption during Kittypalooza with the exception of a few kittens who still need to be spayed or neutered, along with those who are too small to be adopted at this time.
The City of San Antonio Care Services hours of operation are from Monday thru Friday from 1p.m. till 7 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Kittypalooza special will remain available until 5 pm Sunday.
