WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The nonprofit Prison Fellowship will conduct a free Angel Tree Sports Camp at Cornerstone Christian School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday
  • The camp will feature sports luminaries Sherman Williams and Alexander Wright

Prison Fellowship, the nation’s largest Christian nonprofit serving prisoners, former prisoners, and their families, will conduct a free Angel Tree Sports Camp at Cornerstone Christian School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2021. The event will benefit more than 100 children, ages 7 to 14, and will be led by area high school and college coaches.

The camp will feature two celebrated speakers in the world of sports: Sherman Williams, former running back for the Dallas Cowboys from 1995-1999, and Alexander Wright, a former wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Raiders, and the St. Louis Rams.

In 2000, Williams was sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in prison for three counts of conspiracy to distribute. After being released from prison, he started a community assistance program for disadvantaged children and returned to the University of Alabama to receive his degree in 2018.

Wright, a two-time winner of the NFL’s Fastest Man Competition in 1992-1993, serves as the athletic director and head football coach for Cornerstone Christian School. He is also the current president and CEO of Alexander Wright Ministries in Amarillo, Texas.

“Through lessons, drills, and fun competition, kids who might not otherwise have a chance to attend a day camp are treated like champions,” said Joe Avila, National Director of Angel Tree Sports Camps, via email. “It's a unique opportunity for youth of all ages and abilities to learn from seasoned college players and former professional athletes.”

Prison Fellowship is a leading voice for criminal justice reform and has over 40 years of experience helping restore individuals behind bars. The organization advocates for federal and state criminal justice reforms that transform those responsible for crime while “encouraging communities to play a role in creating a safe, redemptive, and just society,” stated a spokesperson in a press release.
