On Friday, four-term Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales presided over the final meeting of her tenure as chair of the City of San Antonio’s Transportation Committee.

“It’s been an honor to lead the City’s transportation,” she said in a statement on Friday. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and of the work we’ve done to lay the groundwork for a better, safer and more equitable transportation system for the city.” 

The West Side representative also thanked City Manager Erik Walsh for creating the new Transportation Department and for bringing Tomika Monterville on board to be at the helm. 

“The work done regarding Vision Zero, complete streets, and safe streets is and will be transformational for all of San Antonio and [I] urge my colleges to continue the work we’ve started and guide us on the road to a better city,” she added. 

Gonzales’ successor on San Antonio City Council will be decided in a June 5 runoff. Neighborhood leader Rudy Lopez and housing advocate Teri Castillo are the two candidates vying for the seat.
