WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • San Antonio’s Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff have issued a joint emergency declaration amidst the upcoming winter storm
  • Residents are encouraged to stay home and take precautions, such as setting thermostats between between 68-70 degrees, keeping doors and windows closed to prevent heat loss and wear warm, comfortable clothing.

In anticipation of the severe weather conditions ahead of the winter storm, Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff issued a joint emergency declaration for the City of San Antonio. The declaration activates the City of San Antonio and Bexar County emergency management plans. The declaration also enables the city and county to seek state and federal reimbursements for services rendered in response to the unprecedented and severe weather conditions.

“Bexar County is being impacted by some record low temperatures and icy conditions.  County Emergency Operations are in full effect to safeguard our residents as much as possible. However, this weather is shaping up to hang around longer than originally anticipated.  We urge every resident to seek shelter from the cold, warm their homes safely, and to stay off the roads,” Wolff said.

The City of San Antonio continues to monitor expected winter weather and encourages residents to take proper precautions ahead of the expected major winter storm. The region is projected to see patchy, freezing drizzle and freezing rain through the weekend, along with a chance of sleet with a change to snow on Sunday night. These conditions could make travel difficult.

“Play it safe and take the weather forecast seriously. Stay at home if you can and don’t make risky, unnecessary trips when ice is on the road,” Nirenberg said.

A major winter storm will move across the region Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. Snow and ice are expected. Travel will be difficult to near impossible in these conditions. Blowing snow in some areas could also reduce visibility and snow may obscure the ice underneath. Travel is highly discouraged Sunday night through Monday. Should there be need to travel, precautions should be taken — such as driving lower than the speed limit and staying alert on the road.

“The San Antonio Police Department and Public Works are actively monitoring roadway conditions.  Please help keep emergency response crews safe by limiting your travel as this severe winter weather system travels through our region. Please call 311 to report service issues and 911 for all emergencies,” City Manager Erik Walsh said.

City services will continue as normally scheduled, unless noted below. Residents are encouraged to report any service issues to 311. The San Antonio Fire Department also provides winter weather safety information at this link. The public can sign up for SMS text message alerts by sending COSAGOV to 55000 or downloading the Ready South Texas app on their mobile device.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is expecting record energy use throughout the state throughout the weekend and early into next week. CPS Energy is requesting that customers take steps now and through the weekend to reduce energy use for both electric and natural gas service. Residents can help conserve energy by setting thermostats between 68-70 degrees, keeping doors and windows closed to prevent heat loss and wear warm, comfortable clothing.

Animal Care Services

  • The best way to protect pets during a winter storm is to bring them inside. Pets (especially cats) are safer indoors. If you are unable to have pets inside, consider purchasing an insulated doghouse or build a protective enclosure that shields your pet from the elements and gives them a safe, warm place to rest.

  • Although outdoor pets need proper shelter because it protects them from the elements, it’s also the law here in San Antonio and violators face zero tolerance during extreme weather events. Fines generally start at $300 per violation.

  • Pets who stay outdoors without shelter may also seek warmth anywhere they can. To prevent a dog from escaping the yard, repair broken fencing and gates and fill in any holes along fence lines.
