WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • A photography exhibition of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings, will be touring San Antonio from June 11 to Sept. 9, 2021.
  • Standard access to the exhibit is $17.50 for adults and $12.70 for children ages 4-12.

The Renaissance graces San Antonio through Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings, hosted on the Lambermont Estate by SEE Global Entertainment.

Continuing its tour around the United States, the replicated works of the seminal Florentine Renaissance artist settle in San Antonio from June 11 to Sept. 9, bringing “An Up-Close, Life-Size, Never-Before-Seen Perspective,” according to the exhibition’s website press release.

Although not the original oeuvre located in Vatican City, visitors can still experience the art via “licensed high definition photos [brought] to life using a special printing technique that emulates the look and feel of the original painting, [...] seeing every detail, every brushstroke, and every color of the artist’s 34 frescoes.” The reproductions are also “as close to the original size as possible.”

A visit to the exhibit is ticketed and timed, lasting between 1 to 1.5 hours. Standard access to the exhibit is $17.50 for adults and $12.70 for children ages 4-12. Additional pricing options for VIP access, families, seniors, students and more are detailed on the exhibition’s website.

Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays to Sundays, access to the exhibit will be separated into half-hour slots. Visitors will be required to wear a face-covering at all times.

The art will take its viewers from the first to the third floor of the mansion on the estate; the press release clarifies the mansion is not wheelchair accessible, but the frescoes will be displayed in “poster size” on the first floor “for those that can not walk to the upper floors.”

A downloadable audio guide for those with limited vision will also be available. An “audio guide system with augmented reality that you can use on your own smart phone” is also mentioned on the exhibition’s website.

Given the difficult nature of travel due to the still-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the thousands of miles separating San Antonio and the original work, experiences like the Sistine Chapel Exhibit are rare opportunities to absorb essential art history and culture without spending significant time and money.

“Whether visitors have already been to the Sistine Chapel or not, everyone can admire the artwork up close, at their own pace, and with the ability to capture photographic memories of this iconic work,” the press release states.
